The official Xbox 360 hard drive will allow backwards compatibility, which allows you to play the original Xbox games.

Besidesbeing able to play original titles, being more reliable, and considerably more expensive, official drives and knock offs are exactly the same. If you have an official drive for the S or E (they're the same drive), then you're golden. If you do not, buy the 250GB console, which is arguably the better investment anyways.
