Compared to the other f/2.8 standard zoom for Z-series mirrorless cameras, the Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S, this new lens is 30% lighter, with the 24-70mm S weighing in at 805g. Build quality is good, but not outstanding, for what is after all only an enthusiast-level lens.

Product description. The Nikkor Z 24-70mm F4 S is a full-frame lens designed for Nikon's Z-series mirrorless system. The 24-70 features a retractable design, one aspherical ED and three aspherical elements, Nano Crystal and fluorine coatings and electromagnetic aperture control. A customizable ring can be used for focus, aperture, and exposure
The Z 24-70mm f/4 is a great lens for what it is, but it's no match for the f/2.8 version and likely neither for a macro at short focus distances. Going for the Z 85mm f/1.8 over the zoom will surely yield sharper images, but in order to shoot at very short distances, a macro will probably be even better.
NIKON Z 7 + NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S @ 70mm, ISO 1600, 1/8, f/4.0. NIKON Z 7 + 70-200mm f/4 @ 110mm, ISO 64, 1/60, f/8.0. More image samples of this lens can be seen on Nasim’s review of the Nikon Z7 camera.
